Self Portrait of an Architect: Archiving Life - DEX'18

Imagine one day you are given a box... A simple one, approx. 50x30x20 or so, and in that box you have to put the things you care about. For those of us who has to travel and move around knows exactly what it feels like. This days we tend to pack 'functional' in the boxes - suitcases, while the items of some sentimental value - photographs, conversations, moments,  tend to be digital.
When looking at myself, at my life, my approach to things, I have realized the extend of hoarding which I possess regardless the fact that I have to move from place to place from time to time...
I keep things. I keep photographs printed out. I keep paintings and sketches and print outs and papers and books and small items. If I don't get to take them with me they stay in the place which I am leaving...sometimes I wish I could go back, take it all in, feel the same way I've felt before (it is possible I still live in the past).

In this project I was able to represent myself through the past, through the memories of it and through the experiences. To do so I have created a Memory Vault, an archive, a space that functions as a storage room for all the things I find important, not always functional. In this scenario I am allowed to enter the vault, look around the things I have, go up through the levels and stairs, get to the roof and reminisce, remember...

The space only works on the inside. On the outside it can be a box, quite literally. Inside, however, it is a simple space with a complex meaning. Each corner has to feel 'real', be 'used' and carry the zeitgeist within itself. Sterile, clean, empty is irrelevant here.

The box has symbols in it. Some of them maybe more personal than the others. There is a particular choice for the ambiance of the floor. All the details are selected carefully.
Take a moment to find the meaning, or simply guess it, in an attempt to understand who am I.

This moment of self reflection through architecture was captured with the help of the one and only Alexander Brodsky whose influence on the work, though subtle, is definite.
Thank you.

Dex: Self Portrait Architecture

DEX 2018
Self Portrait Architecture

Self portrait architecture reflects the 'portrait' of the architect which represented in the design.
I see my self portrait as a collection of thoughts and mind rather than my face. And people that I let
into my life also shape and form me. So this landscape design is the representation of my mind and how
people interact and react with it.

The plan was organised in the layers of circular area. The outer one represent the Public part, middle one
is the Social part and the inner one is the Personal part. The more closer to the center the more dense it become.

Public : provided table and seat for a long conversation. It allows many people to meet and it can also be temporary, people can just come and go.
Social : provided bench for resting and private talk. It refers to how you chose people you want to make a relationship with.
Personal : allow people to walk by their own while observing their thought and others.

The partitions made of the green chalk board which allow people to write, reply, draw and express their feeling and thought. It creates the interaction through this medium.

Self Portrait of an Architecture: One line

One line

Everything starts from a dot
I love being at home
I come from the town by the sea
I love being by the sea

This is one line drawing portrait which has clear starting and ending point. This portrait is the starting point of the whole project. This is my memory exhibition.

I see myself as a square as I always follow all rules and serious about myself. Therefore, everything is based on grid. The plan of the this architecture is reflected by the single line drawing same as portrait. The single line drawing creates rooms by crossing the line. There are three main room that exhibit different things that will make people remind of somethings. There is only one entrance and exist. Also there is only one way to get in and get out of my space.

The site is located by the sea but not on the sand as I love being by the sea. There is a translucent wall around the exhibition as sometimes I keep myself away from people. There is an only way that can get in the building which is hidden on the wall.

This is temporary architecture. The inside structure are squricle shapes. The structure still in square shape but not sharp like outside. The reason for that is I try to give myself more freedom inside me but I did not show it outside. The material that used for walls are fabric.

‘Happy Birthday’ is for everyone at any age.
It is a vertical fun park that has levels stacked up
like layers of cake and covered with fancy icing & sprinkle.
Each attraction is designed to be on the specific floor as inspired by
what we love to do and what happened or could happen in that period of age.

Self-Portrait of an Architect : The Identical Opposition

The

Identical

Opposition

The project was raised upon the reflection of an architect, in this case, me. I interpreted myself as one ordinary person who enjoys the relaxation of nature and through music. I would say that i have a slow living lifestyle but in contradiction my style of working is totally different from my normal daily routine as I'm quite a serious worker.

I converted my self-portrait into an architecture located along the beach looking toward the city. The pavilion consisted of two buildings looking into opposite sides. One, looking toward the city, is furnished with working desks and working furniture. On the other hand, the other side of the pavilion overlooks the beach. This side of the pavilion is only furnished with a single couch in the middle of the room surrounded with an enhanced sound of the wave outside the pavilion. The humble looking wooden structure has an identical construction to both side of the pavilion to trick the visitors into believing that the two rooms also have an identical function. The different function of the rooms create a surprising factor to the visitors.

Self portrait of an Architect: Something Inside

Self-Portrait of An Architect: Something Inside

This project focus on translating self-portrait through architecture. Start with self-portrait,  it is a trace of my formal pictures through out the years since middle school.  The formal pictures in my personal point of view remind an idea of a serious, scary, and introvert as the first impression of myself.

The simple house shape reflects the idea of my external appearance which is serious, scary, and introvert. The language of it remind most of the people that it possibly be a domestic house or a barn.
It is located in a lonely empty landscape which also represents the introverted side of me. The 50 cm thick external wall mimic the thought of fortress protect inside from outside. However, a single entrance at the front leads users to five non-corner spaces inside which are the reflection of my personalities.

The first room is a dark room represent scary side. Next, there are two possibilities entering to the next spaces. First possibility is a long narrow space where it represents under-controlled or limited thought. The user will be forced to keep moving forward without acknowledging the ending point similar to life's future. Another possibility is a loud room which a light structure that covered with fabric creating sound. This room is presenter of loud speaking. After, the user will found himself in a gigantic empty white room. He will feel the emptiness and lonely. The last space is a round that full of concave mirror. The user is able to play with his/her hilarious distorted reflection since sometimes I find myself funny. At the end, He or her will discover the actual spaces as the final journey of life.

Final model and study model made of white plaster and white clay

Exhibition of 4 emotions

Starting with my self portrait, I often see myself as a normal person with a normal life, each day experiencing a wide variety of emotions that depend on the situations life puts me in. Life isn’t stable, so no one can be happy or sad all the time. The problems and events that we face and how these make us feel are often shown through our facial expressions. Thus, I decided to place my face on a six-sided cube, with each part of my face (eyes, nose, mouth, and cheeks) represented on each face. Each cube I created represents one emotion, of which there are four total: happiness, wonder, sadness, and excitement. These four cubes can be stacked together to be compose my face and represent how my emotions change throughout the day.

As for the design, I decided to make it this way so that people can experiment with internal emotions. If you look only on the outside, you will not know the true emotion of each cube; only by experiencing the inside of each room (light, material, space, etc.) can you understand fully.

Self-Portrait of an Architect : The Zoo Globe

T H E   Z O O   G L O B E

SELF - PORTRAIT

Collaging random pictures I like into a picture of mine to represent different pieces of my life.
Looking at it again, there are mostly green and blue color tone, some animals, snow globe, and trees.
For me, those objects are positive power where they bring relief and happiness.

With a combination of animals, trees, and snow globe,
it came out to be a zoo in a glass dome separating different atmospheres, with a central huge tree.

In another way to see, this zoo globe is representing kind of my cycle of feeling.
Starting from the entrance into this space is an underground tunnel,
where it is dark and narrow, pointing out to how sometimes life is hard.
However, at the right time when actually getting into the dome is
when the future is more bright as enlighten some ideas.
But that is not it. The spiral circulation is required user to face all parts,
which each part represents different obstacles or emotions in life that are unavoidable.
Finally when reaching to the top part on the tree is a time when you start looking back down there,
and realize how far you came, and think that it was not that bad.

Self Portrait of an Architecture : Layers of mine(d)

Self Portrait of an Architecture:
Layers of mine(d)

Since I usually pick and choose my feeling or thoughts to express, I feel like most of the time I am setting a boundary between me and the others. Therefore I interpreted myself into layers of walls that made out of different material to portray, perhaps, the processes which happen in my mind.
The outermost wall is made of the most solid materials out of the 3 layers, particularly, with a fixed form. This is to represent how I choose to appear or express myself to the others. Additionally, it is a result of what is going on inside.
While the second layer is composed of fragmented partition walls. This layer represents the way thoughts and feeling are organised. It shows that a lot more things are going on inside in contrast to what is shown on the outermost wall. There are 2 types of the partition walls: ones that movable and ones that are fixed, where there are based on a grid system, representing how things are, still, handle in an organised way.
The metal rotatable partitions are representing things that I choose to express, these partitions can be move(rotate) to create various patterns that allow the space to be looked at differently. Where the fixed partitions are made of soft material such as fabric, representing something inside that is uncontrollable, particularly, the area where it is affected by others which I can't choose to receive them or not, in this case, the material is affected by weather.
The innermost layer is a curved wall, specifically, green wall (covers by plants). It refers to the initial feeling or emotion before it will be manipulated. This is the core where it is the most ever-changing place where the plants are affected by the weather or other factors, making it grows, dries, dies, blooms, etc. While the cause of everything is the circular hole above it, which the physical function is the observatory space.
Roof and passages are added to create special effects, the routes of emotion. For example, the route of a normal day can be created by enter through the south entrance where the is the shortest transition bwtween inside and outside plus the holes on the roof is letting a lot of light to the inside before entering the circular core space, therefore the atmosphere seems to be similar and constant.
The route the represent a stressful feeling is by entering through the long dark corridor on the east side which will create sharp cut between inside and outside space, additionally, by circulating pass the lowering roof will make people feel cramped and more pressure, while the holes on the lowered roof can be referred to an escape. The focus situation can be created by entering the west entrance where the small hole above the highering roof will draw people attention and concentration, for instance.
These ways of entering can also refer to the way different people getting to know a person, since every single one of them may approach that person with different way and perspective, resulting a different journey and atmosphere towards a true core.
Link to full resolution pdf
The overall dynamics the flow in the space is similar to what happens on a nautilus shell where there is an exchange between the inside and outside situation. While people outside get to know the things inside by breaking in, the living thing inside is growing up by breaking out.
