Thailand is a land where modernity and black magic can coexist peacefully, the word ‘Sy’ derived
from thai word ‘ไสยศาสตร์ ’ ( Sai-ya-saad ) or Thai Black magic. The ritual and beliefs of thai people along
with black magic spells has been existence since ancient times, even now in the present time. It is one of the
strongest and powerful spiritual forces of the universe as well as in Thailand, the mystical science
called ‘Saiyasaad’ the spell and sorcery.
‘Sy mask’ inspired from the basic materials used in thai ritual ceremony such as candle, incense
or flower each of them has been used for a reason for example the light from candle will makes a person
to be more concentrate and calm down the flame is a symbolic medium for mental defining of the area of meditation
in order to generate energy that will not disturb by distraction power while meditating.
The smoke from incense is floating upward like a message to tell god of what you want to
say which also turn the normal space to be more magical by its scent. The fresh flower to calm down
by it smell makes people feel relax. However, the mask use incense as a material in order to make people
focusing on the sense of smell. Therefore, the Sy mask emphasizes on the reaction of a perso after experienced
the mask by the smell which aims to remind people of the tradition from the past that still existing to be
saved as one of the fascinating fact of the cultural heritage.
